HAIX Scout 2 Goretex Hiking Boots are well respected high performance hiking boots made by HAIX in a factory in Croatia.
They are a medium weight boot (c650g UK size 9),and goretex lined to be fully waterproof with a hard wearing Vibram outsole. The leather is Nubuck with fabric inserts giving good breathability for warmer weather.
Scouts have been around for a few years and are a staple boot for Military use by European defense forces and have a big following in America with hikers and backpackers who use the boot as a 4 season boot in extreme conditions.
Apart from governemnt contracts HAIX supply the Scout through resellers and retail from their own website for £229.

The first impression on wearing the HAIX Scout 2 is that they are comfortable straight away as long as the fitting is correct. They run true to size but if you want to wear thick socks for winter use I would suggest going up 1/2 size from shoe / trainer size. There is a HAIX footbed which is good qaulity and wicks moisture away so adds to a good fit around your feet.

There is plenty of cushioning in both the vibram cup sole and standard footbed so for tarmac and rocky paths the boots feel comfortable with good ankle support but the sole is hard enough not to feel sharp rocks or ridges when walking up or downhill on scree or loose rocks.

I customised the look of these Scouts by applying a coat of Meindl Sportswax carefully to the leather for extra protection (the waterproof goretex membrane keeps the water out) and made some custom contrast laces to enhance the look of the boots.
I have walked about 300 odd miles in these HAIX Scout 2's in the last couple of months. They were Grade 1 ex-military when purchased and they have become a favourite go to boot for walking the dogs a few miles in wet and dry conditions and for longer 15-20 mile hikes with a light backpack. They are easy to drive in and are a boot you can put on in the morning and not take off till the end of the day, not something you can say about a lot of hiking boots - they are that comfortable to wear.
They don't feel like a fabric boot from Merrel, Keen, or Hoka even though they have a lot of fabric in the build and they are not heavy, they feel more like all leather boots which is down to the build quality from HAIX and this is why they are chosen a Military boot. It makes them ideal for daily walking and hiking. They are tough, if they can stand up to military use they can stand up to most of the outdoors stuff any of us can throw at them
HAIX Scout 2 Goretex Recommended uses:
Short and long walks and more serious hiking and summer trail climbing like Wainrights, Snowden and Ben Nevis.
